Increasingly government archives are accessioning very current records containing confidential or privileged information that may be the focus of research interest. Requests for access often arrive upon transfer of records, require immediate response, and can force the archives into the midst of political controversy. Panelists explore issues relating to access to modern government records, including statutes governing access, the archives/researcher relationship, the archives/records creator relationship, protecting individual rights, and whether government transparency is real or political rhetoric.
