Panelists address the importance and challenges of noncommercial radio archives, discussing efforts to preserve and provide access to alternative, community, college, and public affairs radio materials; difficulties posed by audio formats; noncommercial radios research value; and archival stewardships benefits. Topics include appraising, preserving, making accessible, and showcasing college and public affairs radio; preserving and providing access to broadcasts threatened by Hurricane Katrina; and a survey concerning current efforts to document noncommercial radio.

Laura Schnitker is an ethnomusicologist at the University of Maryland, where she completed her Ph.D. in 2011. She works as the sound archivist in Special Collections in Mass Media & Culture, and in 2012 attended the Modern Archives Institute on a MARAC scholarship.
